A brand-new Belgian beer is making the rounds in the global beer community after winning a gold medal at the International Beer Challenge.

At the International Beer Challenge competition, held in London (UK) in September 2022, in the Tripels category, Engelken (roughly translated as Little Angel) surprised everyone, including its brewers.

A group of five friends, De Brouwbende (The Brewing Gang), launched this beer in April 2021. It is named after an old brewery, Den Engel, located in Berlare (in the province of East Flanders) which closed in 1930. Originally, this beer was brewed on a small scale for the local market, where they had received positive feedback. So for it to receive such international acclaim so soon was definitely a surprise for them. Even with Engelken’s success, they still plan to keep this project local, considering that this is all purely a passion project for them, on top of their full time jobs.

The Engelken is not for the faint of heart: at 8.5% alcohol, it’s a strong beer, as Tripels typically are. You could say that Tripel beers are a bit of a Belgian specialty. They are pale ales that are high in alcohol content, usually between eight and ten percent. The Engelken sets itself apart with hints of citrus and stone fruit. Added to that, now, is the taste of victory at the International Beer Challenge.
